William James Hickey was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 1 September 1885 and joined the Royal Navy 7 April 1904. Advanced Cook’s Mate on 2 June 1909, whilst serving in H.M.S. Crescent, and Leading Cook’s Mate on 1 September 1912, he joined H.M.S. Ambuscade in July 1913, and served in her during the Great War, including at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May to 1 June 1916. Promoted Leading Cook on 18 May 1919, he was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 3 March 1920, whilst serving in H.M.S. Dido, and was advanced to Petty Officer Cook on 10 May 1924. Shore pensioned on 3 March 1926, he subsequently served on the Royal Yacht and during the Second World War as a Chief Petty Officer Cook. He died in Hampshire in 1979.
