Charles John Hollinsworth joined the Royal Navy in 1884, and was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1894, whilst serving in H.M.S. Melampus. He served in H.M.S. Terrible during the Boer War, September 1899 until May 1900, and then in H.M.S. Barfleur during the Third China War, receiving his China Medal personally from H.M. King Edward VII at the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport, on 8 March 1902. Having been shore pensioned in 1906, he was recalled in 1914 on the outbreak of the Great War, and served first in H.M.S. Isis, as part of the 11th Cruiser Squadron, and then at the shore training establishment H.M.S. Indus, where, with his experience, it is likely he was employed as an instructor (additionally entitled to a 1914-15 Star and a Victory Medal). He finally retired on 24 October 1919, and died in Plymouth in 1946.

Sold together with a group photographic image of the recipient.
