Edmond Donovan was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1869, and attested for the Royal Munster Fusiliers at the city of his birth, in November 1888. He served with the Regiment in South Africa, August 1899 - September 1902 (awarded his L.S. & G.C. in 1908; Delhi Durbar confirmed). He was discharged 18 May 1913, having served 24 years and 186 days with the Colours.

Donovan joined the Corps of Commissionaires before re-engaging for service during the Great War, 21 November 1914. He was posted to the 8th Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers in the same month, before transferring to the 5th Battalion, 28 December 1915. He was discharged ‘no longer physically fit for war service’, 31 March 1916, and died in Leeds in December 1923.
