George Henry Ellis was born in Silverdale, Staffordshire, in 1870, and attested for the North Staffordshire Regiment at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, on 16 January 1891. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he transferred to the 1st Battalion on 11 May 1892, and served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan from 5 October 1895 until 27 November 1897, taking part in the Dongola Expedition, 19-26 September 1896. Transferring to the reserve on 29 November 1897, he was recalled to the Colours on 26 December 1899, and served with the Regiment in South Africa from 27 March 1900 until 30 November 1901. Returning to the reserve on 8 April 1902, he was finally discharged on 15 January 1903, after 12 years’ service.
