William H. Plumtree served in the ranks of the Lincolnshire Regiment in Sudan, and during the Second Boer War. He advanced to Sergeant Major, and served with the 5th Battalion from 1911 (L.S. & G.C. July 1907). He was commissioned Quarter Master and Honorary Lieutenant, 5th (Territorial) Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, in April 1912. He served with the Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, 27 February 1915 - 12 January 1916 and 4 February 1916 - 11 November 1918, and in the Egyptian theatre of war, 13 January 1916 - 3 February 1916. He advanced to Quarter Master and Honorary Captain, in October 1917, and continued to serve with the 5th Battalion after the war. He retired with the rank of Quarter Master and Honorary Major in 1928 (T.D. London Gazette 4 February 1927).

Ernest Clifford Plumtree was the son of the above.
