Peter Steele was born in Walker, Northumberland, and attested in the Cameron Highlanders at Edinburgh, in January 1892. He served with the Regiment during the Nile Expedition of 1898, and was present at the battles of the Atbara and Khartoum. He served in South Africa, March 1900 - July 1900 (entitled to QSA with ‘Johannesburg’, ‘Diamond Hill’ and ‘Wittebergen’ clasps). He was discharged 7 March 1908, having served 16 years with the Colours. He re-engaged for service during the Great War with the 18th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, 21 October 1914. He was released for munition work with the Wallsend Shipway and Engineering Company, in September 1916.
