Frederick David Knowles was born in Windsor, Berkshire, and attested for the 20th Hussars at Colchester, in November 1885. He served with the Regiment in Egypt, May 1886 - November 1890. He transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1892, and was discharged 24 November 1897, having served 12 years.
