Robert Taylor was born in Leicester in 1842 and enlisted in the Corps of Armourers on 30 May 1867, having been a gunsmith by trade. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Foot on 8 May 1868, he was advanced to Armourer Sergeant and served until he was convicted by Court Martial on 16 August 1876 for lending money with interest and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Reduced to the rank of Private, he was posted back to the Corps of Armourers upon his release. Promoted back to Armourer Sergeant on 1 August 1877, he was posted to the 74th Foot (2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry) on 22 August 1879, and served with them in Egypt from 8 August 1882 until 18 February 1883. Promoted Staff Armourer Sergeant on 31 March 1886, he was finally discharged on 30 May 1890, having served in South Africa, Mauritius, China, Egypt, and the East Indies.
