Robert Pegler was born in Bridgewater, Somerset, in March 1864. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class, in January 1880. His service included with H.M.S. Northumberland, December 1881 - May 1884, during which time he advanced to Able Seaman. Having further advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class, he served with H.M.S. Satellite, January 1894 - August 1897. He was ‘Shore Pensioned’ in March 1902, and served during the Great War at H.M.S. Victory I, 2 August 1914 - 25 September 1914. He was discharged ‘Medically Unfit’ on the latter date.
