John Groom was born in Thrapston, Northamptonshire, and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Claydon, in August 1846. He served with the Regiment during the Crimean campaign, and was ‘wounded at the action of Alma, a slight contusion of right arm and thigh’ (Service Papers refer). He was discharged 18 July 1865, having served 18 years and 156 days with the Colours.
