William James Rind was born at St Ninians, Stirling, on 13 July 1806, eldest son of Major James Nathaniel Rind, Bengal Army, and brother to Captain James Nathaniel Rind, 37 N.I., who was killed in the retreat from Kabul in 1842. He entered the Indian Army as a Cadet, 1823, and was was posted as Ensign to to the 20th Bengal Native Infantry in 1824. He transferred to the newly-raised 3rd Extra Regiment (later became 71st N.I.) in May 1825 and served with that Regiment at the siege and capture of Bhurtpoor. Appointed Adjutant 71st N.I., 1829; promoted Captain 1839; served at Jullundur, Doab in the Second Sikh War, and was invalided on 7 December 1849. He died at Mussoorie on 20 August 1869. Sold with full research including copied record of service, Bhurtpoor Prize Roll and relevant medal rolls.
