James I (1603-1625), A fine silver snuff box, the lid inset with the Ark Badge or naval reward oval silver medal by Nicholas Hilliard (?), bust of James I three-quarters right, his suit of a falling lace collar and a slashed doublet decorated with diamond buttons and jewels on mounts, wearing the George of the Garter suspended from a riband, + IACOBVS. D. G. MAG. BRITA. FR. ET. HI. REX. + fidei defensor. rev. Ark upon the sea, smoke emitting from its chimney; above, bright rays bursting from clouds, + STET. SALVVS. IN. VNDIS., 55 x 43mm (MI 233/95), the box late 18th century, by Karl Gustavus Hauffe, Riga, the inside lip of lid marked in lozenge ‘cgh’, the lid lightly engraved around edge with laurel leaves, internally gilt, octagonal, 90 x 65 x 22mm. The medal cast, chased and gilt, good fine, the box with some old surface marks and the engraving with some wear, otherwise very fine, extremely rare (£2,000-3,000)
