John McMan was born in Dumfries, Scotland, in 1833 and attested for the Royal Artillery at Brighton, Sussex, on 27 July 1854. He served with ‘A’ Troop during the Crimean War, and was promoted to Bombardier on 1 January 1858; Corporal on 1 July 1858; and Sergeant on 20 January 1859.
