Lachhman enlisted in the Dogras in 1903, and served during the Great War in Aden, September to November 1917, and on the North West Frontier of India in 1919, where he was wounded. He was commissioned Jemadar in 1918, and was promoted Subadar in 1923, and Subadar-Major in 1931. He was subsequently awarded the Order of British India 2nd Class with the title of Bahadar.
