Robert Russell Sparks was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on 27 April 1878, and received a commission as Lieutenant in Princess Louise’s Dragoon Guards on 6 May 1917, having previously served for 6 years in the 43rd Ottawa Regiment. Appointed Lieutenant in the Railway Construction and Forestry Corps on 12 May 1917, he embarked for England, in September of that year, and proceeded to France for service in the Great War on 15 October 1917. He was promoted Captain and appointed Paymaster on 12 June 1923, and advanced Major on 11 May 1927. He transferred to the Reserve of Officers on 21 June 1929, and retired the following year. He died on 24 March 1963.
