Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, Suakin 1885; Khedive’s Star 1882 [sic]; India General Service 1854-95, 2 clasps, Burma 1885-7, Burma 1887-9; Queen’s Sudan 1896-98; Khedive’s Sudan 1896-1908, no clasp, mounted as worn in this order, good very fine

Kaisar-i-Hind, G.VI.R., 2nd class, silver, with integral top riband bar; Ghuznee 1839; Cabul 1842, with top silver riband buckle; Anglo-Boer War Medal 1899-1902, with top silver riband buckle, good very fine or better

Silver War Badge, reverse officially numbered ‘149998’ and privately inscribed ‘Lt. Col. Powney 3/Hants Regt. 1914-16’, nearly extremely fine (10) £120-160

Cecil du Pre Penton Powney was born on 21 August 1862, and received a commission as a Lieutenant into the Northamptonshire Regiment on 14 May 1884, having previously served in the Militia. He transferred to the Grenadier Guards a week later, and served with them in the Sudan Expedition (entitled to Egypt Medal with clasp for Suakin 1885 and Khedive’s Star). Appointed Aide-de-Camp to Lord Frankfort de Montmorency on 6 July 1891, he transferred with the rank of Captain to the 3rd Battalion Hampshire Regiment (Militia) on 23 October 1895. Promoted Major on 30 April 1904, he served during the Great War as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment at Gosport for the duration of the War at Portsmouth Garrison (entitled to British War Medal only).
