Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (2564 S. S. Mjr: J. Gaskell. 11/Hrs.) very fine £50-70

Joseph Gaskell was born in Leicester, in 1864. He attested for the 11th Hussars, 4 October 1886. Advanced Sergeant, 9 July 1892, and Squadron Sergeant Major, 21 April 1897 (Awarded L.S. & G.C. Army Order October 1897 - his sole entitlement). He was a member of the regimental team that won the Queen’s Cup for Cavalry (Musketry) in 1899. He transferred to the Permanent Staff of the North Somerset Imperial Yeomanry, stationed in Bristol, 1 April 1901. Acting Regimental Sergeant Major, 11 October 1914, and commissioned Honorary Lieutenant and Quartermaster, 2/1st North Somerset Yeomanry, 17 December 1914. He was subsequently appointed Quartermaster to the Southern Army School of Instruction for N.C.O.’s at Brentwood. He died after an operation in Colchester Military Hospital, April 1917, having performed 31 year’s continuous service.
