Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (146146 G. A. Field, Boatn., H.M. Coast Guard), good very fine £50-60

George Arthur Field was born in Camberwell, Surrey in February 1878 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1888. Having then gained advancement to Able Seaman in March 1892 and to Leading Seaman in April 1900, he transferred to H.M. Coast Guard with an appointment as a Boatman at Newhaven at the end of the latter year. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1906, he was likewise employed as a Leading Boatman at Southsea on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. A month or two later, however, he removed to the battleship H.M.S. Agincourt as a Leading Seaman and he remained similarly employed for the duration of the Great War. As a consequence, he was present at Jutland, when Agincourt’s gunnery was responsible for causing the enemy equal consternation, her mighty salvoes straddling their battleships and cruisers on several occasions, a case in point being the twice hit Kaiser. Indeed by close of play the Agincourt had fired 144 shells from her 12-inch turrets and and another 111 from her 6-inch guns; sold with copied service record.
