Frederick Harwood Rendell was born on 5 March 1894 at Yeovil, Somerset, and joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Exeter, Devon, on 15 June 1914. He served during the Great War first with the Royal Marine Brigade from 13 September 1914, before transferring to H.M.S. Invincible on 25 February 1915. He was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland, 31.5.1916, when H.M.S. Invincible suffered a direct hit to her midships magazine, which blew her in half, and caused her to sink within 90 seconds with the loss of all but six of her crew of 1,032 Officers and ratings, and he is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
