Alexander Smiles was born in 1871 in South Shields, Co. Durham, and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 26 January 1891. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 26 January 1898, having spent his entire career up until that point at home, before being recalled to the Colours on 7 October 1899 following the outbreak of the Boer War. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from 3 January 1900 until 6 October 1902 (also entitled to King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps), and was finally discharged on 25 January 1903 after 12 years’ service.
