Francis Thomas Dance was born in 1880 in Newbury, Berkshire, and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry in London on 27 February 1901. He served with the 109th (Yorkshire Hussars) Company, 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War in South Africa from 23 March 1901 until 23 August 1902, and was discharged on 30 August 1902 after 1 year and 180 days’ service.
