Robert Hazel Russell was born in 1876 at Leytonstone, Essex, and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry on 23 January 1901, having formerly worked as a brewer and commercial traveller. He served with the 41st (Hampshire) Company, 4th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa from 16 February 1901 until 25 June 1902, and was discharged at his own request on 4 July 1902, after 1 year and 199 days’ service.
