Arthur John McLure was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire. He attested for the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), 15 October 1895. He was tried by court martial for striking a superior officer, June 1898. After a prison sentence of 28 days, he served with the Regiment in South Africa, 6 November 1899 - 14 November 1900. He was severely wounded at Uitval Nek, 11 July 1900. One squadron of the 2nd Dragoons took part in the action in which a Boer force commanded by De la Rey defeated a British force 18 miles to the west of Pretoria. 80 men were killed or wounded and nearly 200 men and 2 guns captured.

McLure was discharged medically unfit and in his claim to pension submitted to the Chelsea Board, 4 April 1901, it gives him as receiving three gunshot wounds (including losing use of an arm) at Uitval Nek.
