George Smith was born at Lavenham, Suffolk, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Winchester on 29 February 1888, having previously served with the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Essex Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion in India between 1889 and 1895, and in South Africa during the Boer War, 28 October 1899 until 16 January 1901.
