William A. Riddler was born in 1881 in Aberdeenshire and attested for the Gordon Highlanders at Aberdeen on 10 February 1902, having previously served in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He served with the Regiment in South Africa from 3 March until 30 June 1902, and was discharged upon his return home after 141 days’ service.
