Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Orange Free State, Transvaal (3511 Pte J Currie. 2nd Dragoons) good very fine £140-180

James Currie was born in Annan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. He attested for the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), 11 September 1890, and served with the Regiment in South Africa, 6 November 1899 - 20 September 1900. He was severely wounded at Uitval Nek, 11 July 1900. One squadron of the 2nd Dragoons took part in the action in which a Boer force commanded by De la Rey defeated a British force 18 miles to the west of Pretoria. 80 men were killed or wounded and nearly 200 men and 2 guns captured.

Currie was discharged medically unfit and in his claim to pension submitted to the Chelsea Board, 18 July 1901, it gives him as receiving four gunshot wounds at Uitval Nek.
