India General Service 1895-1902, 2 clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98 (4607 Pte. E. Folkey 1st. Bn. Ryl. W. Surr: Regt.) good very fine £100-140

Ernest Folkey was born in Lambeth, London, in 1875 and attested for the Queens’ Royal West Surrey Regiment in October 1894, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from November 1896, and took part in the operations on the Punjab Frontier as part of the Malakand Field Force under Major-General Sir Bindon Blood, and with the Tirah Field Force, June 1897 to April 1898. He sailed with his Regiment to South Africa, where he arrived on 3 March 1902, and took part in the final actions of the South African War (entitled to Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps Orange Free State, Transvaal, and South Africa 1902), before returning home in November of that year, being discharged medically unfit on 9 January 1903, after 8 years and 79 days’ service.
