India General Service 1895-1902 (3), 1 clasp, Relief of Chitral 1895 (48504 Shoeg. Smith W. Watling 15th. Fd. By. R.A.), traces of brooch mounting to reverse and suspension re-affixed; another (2), 2 clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98 (5048 Pte. J. Saunders 2d. Bn. K.O. Sco: Bord:; 1st. D.C.L.I. 4020. Pte. W. Haines.) both re-engraved, the first officially, top lugs pierced on first, edge bruising, very fine (3) £140-180

William Watling was born in 1883 in Stradbrooke, Suffolk, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Dover, Kent, on 2 April 1885.

William Haines
was born in 1870 in Launceston, Cornwall, and attested for the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry in February 1893, having previously served in the 3rd Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (Reserve). In July of that year he was tried and imprisoned for desertion, but returned to duty and served with the 1st Battalion in India from February 1894, where he took part in the operations on the Punjab Frontier as part of the Mohmand Field Force, and in the Tirah as part of the Rawalpindi Brigade, June 1897 to April 1898. Returning home via a two year posting in Ceylon, Haines transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1903, and was discharged on 6 July 1905, after 12 years’ service.
