Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 clasps, Ahmed Khel, Kandahar (1185. Pte. C. Mann. 2/60th. Foot.) minor edge bruise, good very fine £200-240

Charles Mann was born in Lavenham, Suffolk, in 1839 and attested for the 60th (King’s Royal Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot at Bury St. Edmunds on 30 December 1864, having previously served for two years in the West Suffolk Militia. He served with the Rifle Corps in India and Afghanistan from 14 September 1867 until 24 January 1881, and took part in the Second Afghan War 1878-80, being present at the battle of Ahmed Khel, 19 April 1880, the march from Kabul to Kandahar (entitled to Star), and the action at Kandahar, 1 September 1880. Returning home from India, he served in South Africa during the First Boer War from 25 January 1881 until 11 January 1882, before being finally discharged on 29 December 1885, after 21 years’ service. He died in Lavenham in May 1892.
