Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 clasps, Ahmed Khel, Kandahar (2114. Pte. M. Leary. 2/60th. Foot.) light contact marks and pitting from Star, very fine £240-280

Michael Leary was born in Glamorgan in 1857 and attested for the 60th (King’s Royal Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot at Wolverhampton on 7 November 1877. Posted to the 2nd Battalion on 30 October 1878, he served with them in India from that date, and in Afghanistan from 9 December 1879. He was present at the battle of Ahmed Khel, 19 April 1880, took part in Lord Roberts’ celebrated march from Kabul to Kandahar (entitled to Star), and was present at the action at Kandahar, 1 September 1880. He subsequently served with the Regiment in South Africa during the First Boer War, 25 January 1881 until 11 January 1882, before returning home and transferring to the Army Reserve in June 1884. He was final discharged on 6 November 1879, after 12 years’ service.
