Arthur Bacon was born in Downham Market, Norfolk, in 1858 and attested for the 9th (Norfolk) Regiment of Foot at Colchester on 10 August 1876. He served with the Regiment in India and Afghanistan from 21 September 1878, and was present in the operations near Kabul, 10 - 23 December 1879. Returning to England in late 1888 he was discharged on 28 November of that year after 12 years and 111 days’ service.
