Edmund Macdonald was born in Belfast in 1848, and enlisted in the 92nd Highlanders on 22 October 1867. He sailed to India the following year on the troopship H.M.S. Malabar, and subsequently joined the Commissariat Department at Calcutta. He transferred to the Unattached List on 20 March 1880, and as late as 1890 he was still serving on the Unattached list as a Sergeant in Bareilly.
