Stephen Heritage was born in St. James’, London, in 1831 and attested for the 4th Light Dragoons at London on 14 June 1855. After two spells of imprisonment he transferred to the 7th Hussars on 1 August 1857 for service out in India, and was present in operations during the Great Sepoy Mutiny in Oude Province, 4 February to 1 October 1858, and at the siege of Lucknow, 2 to 16 March 1858. He remained in India, and in March 1863 was severely injured in a fall from his horse during a Brigade Field Day, his left knee being fractured and dislocated.
