A fine modern campaign service group of eight awarded to Staff Sergeant G. F. Cusack, Corps of Royal Engineers, late Parachute Regiment, who was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Services in Northern Ireland in 1996-97

Q.C.V.S. London Gazette 5 December 1997: ‘Commended for Valuable Service in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Northern Ireland during the period 1st October 1996 to 31st March 1997.’

Gerard Francis Cusack was born on 25 October 1964, and enlisted into the Parachute Regiment at Bradford on 4 January 1983. He transferred to the Royal Engineers on 20 September 1983 and was discharged on 22 January 2005, on completion of his engagement. The following extracts are taken from his discharge Testimonial:

‘SSgt Cusack joined the Army in 1983 and initially trained as a Combat Engineer, achieving Class 1, and an Electrician, achieving Class 2, before moving on to his chosen profession as a Resources Specialist where he achieved Engineer Resources Supervisor. During his career, he has predominantly worked within the Engineer Resources field and is a system administrator for the specialist IT system (Global) associated with that work. During his career, SSgt Cusack has also gained specialist qualifications as a Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, as a Mechanical Handling Equipment (Industrial) Instructor, Unit Fire NCO and Watermanship Safety Officer and holds a free-fall parachuting qualification. Latterly, SSgt Cusack has completed a Bsc (Hons) in Environmental Studies.

Having completed 22 years exemplary service, SSgt Cusack has served in numerous places around the world, both on operational and non-operational tours, such as Cyprus, Germany, Northern Ireland, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. During his service, he has been responsible for sourcing and outloading numerous millions of pounds worth of material on a large number of operations and construction exercises. SSgt Cusack has often had to work with foreign nationals requiring him to use his skills to overcome language, culture, and local rivalry amongst other barriers in order to achieve his aim. In Dec 1997 he was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Services for his work on operations in Northern Ireland.’
