Norman Barker was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1919 and served with the 7th Battalion Leeds Rifles, Territorial Army from 1936 to 1939, and then with the 66th Heavy A.A. Regiment, 185 Battery Royal Artillery throughout the Second World War in the Orkney Islands, Burma, and India.
