Ernest Carter was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. He served during the Great War with the 10th (Service) Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment on the Western Front. He was killed in action, whilst serving with the Grimsby “Chums”, 1 July 1916 - the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in the Ovillers Military Cemetery, Somme, France.
