Arthur William Davie was born on 19 May 1893 at Derby and was commissioned Temporary Sub Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, on 25 November 1915. Having completed a course of engineering at Grain Island, he was posted to Killingholme Air Station, Royal Naval Air Service, Portland, on 3 February 1916, and was promoted Lieutenant on 1 April 1917. Commissioned Captain, Royal Air Force, 1 April 1918, he served with No. 62 Wing in South Russia during the Russian Intervention as a Captain Technician from 13 July 1919, before transferring to the Unemployed List on 22 November 1919.
