Alfred Bulling was born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, in 1886. He served during the Great War with the Essex Yeomanry in the French theatre of war from 30 November 1914. Having advanced to Sergeant in October 1916, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant, 6th Dragoons, in August 1917.
