Joseph Albert John Wood was born on 20 October 1877 at Wingham, Kent, and joined the Royal Navy on 20 November 1896, serving as a Stoker 2nd Class in H.M.S. Wildfire. Promoted Stoker on 1 December 1897, he transferred to H.M.S. Pomone on 7 July 1902, and served in her during the operations on and off the Somaliland coast against Muhammed bin Abdullah, 18 January 1902 until 11 May 1904. Promoted Leading Stoker 2nd Class on 26 January 1904, and Stoker Petty Officer, 26 July 1906, Wood transferred to H.M.S. Newcastle on 20 September 1910, and was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 22 January 1912. Promoted Chief Stoker, 3 May 1913, he served during the Great War first in H.M.S. Pembroke II, transferring for further service in H.M.S. Newcastle on 9 June 1916, before being shore pensioned on 24 April 1919.
