Alfred William Durrant was born in Hackney, London in June 1876 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in December 1892. Advanced to Able Seaman in January 1896 and to Leading Seaman in April 1899, he subsequently witnessed active service off China in H.M.S. Goliath during the Boxer Rebellion (Medal). Having then been promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class in October 1902 and Petty Officer 1st Class in September 1904, he was present in H.M.S. Highflyer in operations in the Persian Gulf in the period 1910-13.

On the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was serving in the cruiser
Euryalus, and he remained similarly employed until removing to another cruiser, Venus, in October 1917, a period that witnessed his advancement to Chief Petty Officer and participation in the Gallipoli landings in April 1915. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1918 and came ashore for a final time in February 1920; sold with copied service record.
