Pair: Piper W. Dobbie, Highland Light Infantry, late Scottish Rifles

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State (697 Pte. W. Dobbie. Scottish Rifles); Militia L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (3981 Pte. W. Dobbie. 4th. Highland L.I.), ‘Militia’ neatly erased from reverse of latter, very fine (2) £300-400

William Dobbie was born at Falkirk, Stirlingshire in 1863, and attested for the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 15 May 1883. He transferred to the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) on 31 March 1896, before being posted to the 4th (Militia) Battalion on 8 December 1899. He served with the Battalion in South Africa from 26 March 1900, and took part in operations in Cape Colony and the Orange Free State, including the engagements at Wachteen-Beetje and Lindley. He returned to the United Kingdom in June 1901, and was discharged ‘time expired’ on 28 July 1901. Following discharge, he attested for the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry at Hamilton, Lanarkshire, 9 June 1902, and served as a Piper in ‘H’ Company. He was awarded the Militia Long Service and Good Conduct Medal by Army Order 24 of February 1906, and died on 7 October of that year, whilst still serving.
