John Welsh was born in Barony, Glasgow, in 1871, and attested for the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders at Glasgow on 10 May 1892, having previously served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Appointed a Piper, he served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan from 4 October 1897 until 2 March 1900, and was present at the Battle of the Atbara, 8 April 1898; and in South Africa from 3 March 1900 until 9 August 1902 (entitled to Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal, and King’s South Africa Medal with 2 clasps). He transferred to the Army Reserve on 6 October 1902, and was discharged on 9 May 1904, after 12 years’ service.
