George Collett was born in 1872 in Bath, Somerset, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Taunton, Somerset, on 30 December 1890. He was twice injured in his first year of service following falls from his horse. He served with the 32nd Field Battery, Royal Artillery in Egypt and the Sudan from 14 March 1893 until 28 October 1898, and was present at the Battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898. After a year back home he went with the Royal Field Artillery to South Africa, and served there until October 1903. Returning home, he was discharged on 12 October 1903, after 12 years and 287 days’ service.
