William Ernest Alfred Edwards was born in Islington, London, in 1874 and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Winchester on 5 June 1893, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Sailing to India in December 1895, he served with the 3rd Battalion as part of the Tochi Field Force under Major-General Sir G. Corrie Bird during operations on the Punjab Frontier, June 1897 to April 1898. He subsequently served in South Africa from 14 February 1902 until the end of the South African War, returning home in October of that year. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 9 February 1903, he was discharged on 4 June 1905, after 12 years’ service.
