Thomas Mitchell was born in Aberdeen on 1 July 1865 and attested for the Gordon Highlanders at Aberdeen on 14 August 1889. He served with the Regiment in Ceylon from 29 December 1890 until 3 January 1892, and then in India until 5 March 1897, where he took part in Chitral Relief Expedition as part of Lieutenant-General Sir Robert Low’s Force, 7 March to 15 August 1895. After returning to the United Kingdom he transferred to the Army Reserve on 9 March 1897, but was recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the South African War, 9 October 1899. He sailed with the Regiment for South Africa, and served during the Second Boer War from 9 November 1899 until 13 July 1902. He was discharged on 16 July 1902, after 12 years 234 days’ service. He died in Aberdeen of Bright’s Disease on 31 March 1904.
