Joseph George was born in Kilpatrick, Glasgow, in 1835 and attested for the Royal Artillery at Calcutta, India, on 5 November 1859, having previously served during the Indian Mutiny in the Bengal Field Artillery at Delhi (discharge papers state: ‘He has been awarded a medal for India with clasp for Delhi’. He served during the China War with the 6th Battery, 12th Brigade, Royal Artillery and was promoted Bombardier, 26 June 1861, he was discharged as medically unfit on 8 August 1865, after 5 years and 273 days’ service.
