Three: Private J. Spillane, 82nd Foot

Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Pte. John Spillane. 82nd. Regt. P.W.V.) Regimentally impressed naming; Turkish Crimea 1855, British issue (2423. J. Spillane. 82nd. Regt.) contemporarily engraved naming, pierced with ring suspension; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (2473 John. Spillane. 82nd Foot) impressed naming, mounted in this order, suspension claw re-affixed on last, heavy contact marks to first therefore good fine, the L.S. & G.C. better (3) £220-260

John Spillane was born in Cahir, Co. Kerry, Ireland, in 1823, and attested for the 82nd (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers) Regiment of Foot at Cahirciveen in January 1847. He served with the Regiment in the Crimean War, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, on 28 November 1868. He was discharged, having never risen above the rank of Private, in August 1869, after 22 years and 207 days’ service.
