B.E.M. London Gazette 12 June 1947 Francis John Bean, Laboratory Assistant, Ministry of Supply.

Francis John Bean was born on 19 October 1896 at Southampton, and joined the Royal Navy on 19 April 1912 as a Boy Second Class serving in H.M.S. Impregnable. Advanced Ordinary Seaman on 19 October 1914, he served during the Great War in H.M.S. Essex, and was promoted Able Seaman on 13 February 1915, before transferring to H.M.S. Champion on 8 December 1915 and receiving a further promotion to the rate of Leading Seaman on 2 October 1917. Promoted Petty Officer, 1 April 1920, he transferred to H.M.S. Vernon on 17 May 1927, and was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 5 December 1929. Subsequently advanced to Chief Petty Officer, he saw further service during the Second World War, and in 1947 was awarded the British Empire Medal whilst employed as a Laboratory Assistant at the Ministry of Supply.
