John Harris Culligan, a native of Egremont, Cheshire, served during the Great War with the Royal Army Medical Corps in France from 16 April 1915, and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with 9th Field Ambulance, Guards Division, most likely for gallantry during the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line and the early exchanges in the Third battle of Ypres. Commissioned Sub Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 16 May 1918, he saw further service in H.M.S. Eaglet and undertook a course of instruction in minesweeping, June to December 1918, before being demobilised on 28 February 1919.
