John Arthur Baker was born in 1910 and attested for the East Kent Regiment on 9 January 1925. He transferred to the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) as Bandmaster on 3 September 1951, having obtained the highest marks in all subjects at Kneller Hall, where he won both the Worshipful Company of Musicians Medal and the presentation baton for best conductor, and served with the Regiment in Kenya. He died on 8 February 1959 whilst still serving.
